Throughout the centuries, for Native Americans, early explorers and modern day travelers, the Northern Plains have represented discovery, the western spirit and a sense of freedom that is unrivaled. This part of the world is remote and vast but accessible to you on Montana’s American Prairie Reserve (APR).
The Reserve project is creating the largest wildlife complex in the continental United States by assembling approximately 3.5 million acres of public and private lands. Already comprised of hundreds of thousands of acres, American Prairie Reserve offers the opportunity for visitors to experience the landscape with unexpected luxuries and comfort at Kestrel Camp.
Your stay at Kestrel Camp combines the excitement of visiting a growing conservation project with the amenities and ease you expect from other world-class destinations. If you’re looking for an intimate nature experience, we invite you to join us on an adventure like no other and to share in a vision that will endure for generations to come.
Kestrel Camp has been designed to blend tranquility and wildness without sacrificing comfort. In the spirit of discovery, take the opportunity to connect with something larger than yourself and encounter a breathtaking array of wildlife.
Awaken to the songs of meadowlarks and sunlight slowly creeping across the prairie, a tranquility that can be enjoyed from your private accommodations. Each of our five climate-controlled suites is a sanctuary that brings the outside in and yet appeals to modern sensibilities. Discover the romance of sleeping in a safari style tent-bungalow, and enjoy sweeping views from your panoramic veranda.
Reflect on the day in your personal lounge area. A stocked coffee bar provides you with a chance to greet the sun with solitude. Each suite sleeps two guests, either in a king bed or two twin beds, and premium mattresses and bedding ensure that you are well rested to get the most out of your time on the Reserve. Your accommodations include en suite bathrooms and a dressing room/walk-in closet. Plush linens and robes are provided along with luxury bath products.
Join visiting scientists, naturalists and other special guests for rich conversation and then migrate to the wrap-around porch at sunset. The night sky can be enjoyed around the fire or through the camp’s spotting scopes. The main lounge is well equipped for social engagements and includes a conversation area with a fireplace, sitting area, game table, interpretive library and bar.
You will enjoy gourmet meals and elegant buffets from our on-site commercial kitchen. Meals typically include a light breakfast before the morning activity, a hearty brunch upon return, a field lunch, afternoon tea and snacks, and dinner after cocktails.
The Reserve’s vibrant setting provides a stunning backdrop for adventures and enduring moments to treasure with your family and friends. Our highly knowledgeable naturalists will share with you tales about wildlife, geology, and thousands of years of human history. Unlike the “Big 5” focus of African-style tours, your time on American Prairie Reserve will span time, space and species to provide you with a big picture look at the ecosystem as a whole.
Your experience on the Reserve will also reflect the cycles of the natural world around you as we rise in the morning for an excursion while temperatures are cool and return to camp for leisure time when the sun is high. When late afternoon casts the prairie in golden light, we head out again and enjoy a sundowner on the cliffs overlooking the Missouri River - a guest favorite. Activities continue past nightfall, when nocturnal animals are roaming the land and the most dramatic view of all, the Milky Way, puts on a 360–degree show.
American Prairie Reserve is first and foremost a conservation project, but one of our greatest delights is sharing this place with others. Your visit is a behind-the-scenes look at our efforts to restore nature on a grand scale, from expanding prairie dog towns and growing our bison herd to reestablishing grassland processes like fire and natural water flow.
Including travel to and from American Prairie Reserve, the suggested trip length is three days and two nights. This itinerary includes two nights of lodging in one or more of our suites, guided activities, ground transportation and gourmet meals throughout your stay.
